Some gastrointestinal disorders may present as atypical chest pain. This is chest pain not related to the heart. This usually is associated with gastroesophageal reflux (reflux of stomach acids) and esophageal spasm. In addition, chest pain can be caused when food or liquid gets stuck in the esophagus. Food may get stuck for many different reasons, the most common being stricture or narrowing in the bottom of the esophagus. There are various ways of making the diagnosis of either reflux or strictures. Either an Upper GI Series cna be done or, more likely, an Upper Endoscopy to directly view the Esophagus.
